Role Overview

The President of Wigan Chess Club serves as the figurehead of the club, representing its values, history, and members. The role focuses on guiding the club’s governance and ensuring that decisions are made in the best interests of the club as a whole. While primarily an oversight position, the President plays a critical role in fostering collaboration and professionalism within the club’s leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Governance and Leadership

  1. Chair Meetings:

    • Lead all committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in a prompt, professional, and impartial manner.

  2. Decision Oversight:

    • Ensure that the committee operates democratically, with decisions made by majority vote.

    • Act in the best interests of the club as a whole, providing guidance and support to ensure decisions align with its objectives.

Representation and Figurehead Duties

  1. Club Representation: Represent Wigan Chess Club as a respected figure within the Warrington and District Chess League, English Chess Federation, and other affiliations.

  2. Club History and Legacy: Serve as a symbol of continuity and dedication, reflecting the club’s long-standing values and traditions.

Oversight and Support

  1. Club Oversight: Monitor the club’s overall activities, ensuring alignment with its goals while allowing the committee to function as the primary decision-making body.

  2. Subcommittees: Establish and chair subcommittees when necessary to address specific issues or initiatives.

Financial Responsibilities

  1. Bank Account Signatory: Act as the second signatory on the club’s bank accounts, ensuring financial integrity and accountability.

Accountability

The President is accountable to the Wigan Chess Club Committee and its members, ensuring that the club is guided effectively and its values upheld.
